Take a look at these similar adjoining Italianate row houses across from Library Hall. According to the book “Bricks and Brownstones”, it is not always so common to discover a row of adjoining historic brick rowhouses preserved so well in their cooperative appearance.

The Brownstones at Port Imperial are a nice alternative for those not interested in buying the 150 year old brownstone and restoring it. These 42 modern row houses were constructed about 2 to 3 years ago and originally sold for between $1.1 million and $2.5 million. Some units have elevators and all units have handsome amenities with views of the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline. The smaller townhouses are approximately 2700 square feet and the larger townhouses are as much as 4500 square feet. On the secondary market be prepared to pay between $1.7 and $3.0 million. Real estate taxes will run you $30,000 to $75,000 annually depending on the townhouse. Port Imperial is located in Weehawken on the Hudson River.

Three nearly identical Federal style rowhouses near the corner of West 4th Street and Jones Street in Manhattan. The far left and center rowhouses have pitched roofs while the far right rowhouse has a flat roof. Most probably the flat roof was a subsequent alteration. Removal of a pitched roof to make way for a full third floor was a common later alteration.

Tracing the deed to my house was an all day project, but I managed to backtrack to the year 1860. Many of the deeds were handwritten and nearly illegible. Here are some of the results.

May 15, 1890, Peter Kiernan (widower) TO Thomas F. Kiernan for the sum of (some illegible amount, maybe $5000).
March 14, 1907, Thomas F. Kiernan and Margaret E Kiernan TO Mary A Farrell of the same place for the sum of $1 (and other valuable consideration).
July 17, 1921, William Farrell and Frances Farrell (his wife) TO James P Meehan, Mary A Farrell having died intestate on October 28, 1920.
